Goans are so called because their ancestors hailed from a place called Goa which is now the smallest Indian State on the West Coast of India. Goa was colonized by Portugal and remained a Portuguese Overseas Province from the year 1510 until the year 1961 when it got incorporated into the Republic of India, being always a territorial part of India.

The Goans emigrated to various parts of the world such as East Africa, Pakistan, England, Australia, etc. and now some of them have settled down in Canada particularly in the larger cities of Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Montreal. And in most of these cities, Goans have similarly founded the Association. The Goans in Montreal wanted to showcase their pride in this great Country of Canada and therefore, on July 17, 1977 the QGA was established.
